Some places are so special they deserve to be protected forever.

Just north of Alpena, Potters Point stretches along the shores of Lake Huron with nearly 8,000 feet of undeveloped coastline, pristine coastal wetlands, dense forests, and breathtaking views of Misery Bay. This 41-acre property is one of the most ecologically significant places in Northeast Michigan — and today, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to ensure it remains wild forever.

For more than 50 years, Huron Pines has worked alongside communities and conservation partners to protect the land, water and wildlife that make Northern Michigan such a special place. Potters Point represents one of the most important land protection opportunities we've seen in decades.

Why Potters Point Matters

Potters Point is home to a remarkable variety of habitats found together in very few places along the Great Lakes. Coastal wetlands, fens and mature forests create a landscape that supports rare plants and wildlife while helping keep Lake Huron's waters clean and healthy.

The property provides habitat for species such as the dwarf lake iris, Michigan's state wildflower, and the rare ram's head lady's-slipper orchid. It also lies along a major migratory bird flyway, offering an important resting place for birds traveling hundreds of miles each spring and fall. Nearly 100 bird species have been recorded in a single day at our nearby North Point Nature Preserve, highlighting the incredible ecological value of this stretch of shoreline.

Protecting Potters Point would also complete a nearly continuous ring of protected land surrounding Misery Bay, helping preserve one of the most intact Great Lakes coastal systems in the region.

A Place for People, Too

Conservation isn't just about protecting wildlife — it's also about creating places where people can connect with nature.

If permanently protected, Potters Point will become a public nature preserve where visitors can experience one of Northern Michigan's most beautiful coastlines. Its convenient roadside access makes it an ideal place for bird watching, paddling, nature photography, hiking and simply enjoying the beauty of Lake Huron.

Future stewardship will carefully balance public access with protecting the sensitive ecosystems that make this place so unique, ensuring generations to come can enjoy its natural beauty while preserving its ecological integrity.

A Community Effort

Protecting Potters Point is only possible because of the incredible support of our community.

Together, we've already raised more than $1.3 million toward our $1.52 million campaign goal. Every contribution brings us one step closer to permanently protecting this extraordinary landscape for wildlife, water quality and future generations.

Opportunities like this don't come around often. When an irreplaceable property becomes available and a community comes together to protect it, we have the chance to create a lasting legacy for Northern Michigan.
