Connect to Nature Through iNaturalist

  • Pigeon River Country Discovery Center 9984 Twin Lakes Road Vanderbilt, MI, 49795 United States (map)

Join Huron Pines to learn how you can use the iNaturalist app to better understand the plant and animal species you are seeing while exploring the outdoors or visiting one of our preserves. iNaturalist allows you to monitor and share information about all varieties of plants and animals in your favorite wild places or even your own backyard.

We’ll guide you through the fundamentals of using the iNaturalist app and show how you can contribute to community science by making nature observations and recording them. The data that you collect through the iNaturalist app can help us better understand what plants and animals are living on our preserves and can help you learn more about the natural world.

After an indoor presentation, we will explore the Discovery Center grounds and go on a ~1 mile, guided hike on a marked trail to practice making observations. The trail is slightly uneven with small changes in elevation. Come prepared with closed-toed shoes, sunscreen, bug spray, long pants, a hat, a water bottle, and anything else you need to be comfortable.

We strive to host inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals to engage fully. It is a priority for Huron Pines to ensure that our communications and programming are available and accessible to everyone. Please contact maddie@huronpines.org if you have any questions about accessibility or believe barriers remain.

We recognize that accessibility is not always possible in every area of our work. Our efforts are ongoing. Through a commitment to continued learning and understanding, we will strengthen our awareness of the barriers and inequities that exist at the individual and community levels, in order to advance more equitable opportunities to experience the outdoors in our region.

This event is part of the Protect Wild Places program, supported by the Consumers Energy Foundation, which is working to empower Michigan communities to support the land and water to restore 5,000 acres of wildlife habitat and recreational land, and 150 miles of waterways and Great Lakes shoreline.
