Coast Watchers Training

Welcome to the Coast Watchers Community Science Monitoring Program!

This training will introduce you to the Coast Watchers program and cover the basics of data collection, the data collection protocol and explain how you will choose a location to monitor. You will receive all the supplies you need to conduct the monitoring.

How to Become a Coast Watcher:

Please complete the steps below in order to become a Coast Watcher. We’re excited to have you!

*Mandatory to Watch Before the Start of the Season*

  1. Watch the virtual training video (above)

    If you have participated in Coast Watchers in the past, skip to step step 6

  2. Review the Coast Watchers protocol (click here to view)

  3. Download the Survey 123 app for reporting data onto your smartphone or tablet (click here for instructions)

  4. Download the iNaturalist app onto your smartphone or tablet (optional - click here for instructions)

  5. Choose your monitoring location 

  6. Please indicate your intent to participate by filling out this form

  7. If you need a printed out version of the survey protocol, data sheets, a thermometer and/or a volunteer shirt, please stop by our office in Alpena.

  8. Complete your weekly data collection starting the first week of May

    • You will receive monthly emails with updates and reminders
