Watershed Overview: Ocqueoc
Ocqueoc River Watershed
Ocqueoc River Watershed
Located in Presque Isle County, the Ocqueoc River Watershed encompasses approximately 94,394 acres. The area is very rural, with tourism, farming, forestry and resource extraction the predominant commercial activities. The county itself has nearly 20% public (state) land, which is an attraction for hunting, fishing, wildlife watching, snowmobiling, skiing, and other outdoor activities. Significant areas of undeveloped land remain, giving parts of the Ocqueoc River system a semi-wilderness character. It is common to see deer browsing on the cedar, waterfowl on the lakes and marshes, and one may even catch a glimpse of a black bear lumbering through the woods.

The Ocqueoc River is known for having the largest waterfall in the Lower Peninsula and is a popular tourist and recreation site. The watershed is located in an area of karst topography characterized by sinkholes and the “undergrounds”--an area where a small tributary disappears and remerges several hundred feet downstream.
