COST SHARE FUNDING AVAILABLE: A cost share program to private landowners for removal of phragmites is now available.

Funds provided by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service will cover 75% of the total project removal costs up to $1,000; with the remainder being covered by the landowner.

Interested landowners in Alcona and Iosco counties should contact Jennifer Muladore for more information.

2010 NORTHEAST MICHIGAN COASTAL COOPERATIVE WEED MANAGEMENT PLAN: The plan provides a framework to guide efforts to control invasive weeds in Northeast Michigan, acquire and allocate resources and set natural resource protection goals/objectives to work toward and achieve.

INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL PROGRAM

Invasive species are an international problem and have already cost our state millions of dollars. They adversely affect the habitats they invade by displacing native species, disrupting ecosystems and damaging commercial and natural resources.

In the past, we have worked with a number of groups to address invasive species issues in their area. As the issue has become more pressing, we have created an Invasive Species Program to better address this serious concern.

Our program is centered around an early detection and rapid response approach to control the spread of invasive species.

INVASIVE SPECIES SWAT TEAM

We created an Invasive Species SWAT Team to inventory, monitor and remove key nonnative problem species in Northeast Michigan. The 4-person crew has a crew leader and three Huron Pines AmeriCorps members. Right: Kristen Kozak monitors phragmites on the Lake Huron coastline.

They are targeting three key invasive plants in Northeast Michigan.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

We are currently looking for volunteers to help monitor and remove invasive species. If you or a group is interested in volunteering, please contact Jennifer Muladore and visit our calendar to learn about upcoming volunteer workdays.
