Grayling Stormwater Receives Exemplary Effort Award
March 24, 2008
The Michigan Rural Water Association (MRWA) recently showed its appreciation for the effort to reduce polluted stormwater runoff into the Au Sable River from the city of Grayling.

On Thursday March 20, Huron Pines Executive Director Brad Jensen and City of Grayling Department of Public Works Director Chad Beckett received awards on behalf of the Grayling Stormwater Project at the MRWA's annual meeting and awards banquet at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Acme, MI.

Jensen and Beckett were on hand to receive plaques for the "2008 Exemplary Efforts in Environmental Protection" award, one of many given to rural water utility personnel and projects at the event. In addition, the Grayling Stormwater Project will be submitted to a committee as a candidate for the national award in the same category.

The Grayling Stormwater Project is an ongoing pilot project in the state of Michigan to reduce pollution caused by rainwater runoff in Grayling. Some of the project's highlights include 86 rain gardens and 7 oil and sediment filters, all of which prevent runoff from reaching the Au Sable River. This keeps the water cold and clean, perfect for the trout that attract anglers every year.
