The Paul H Young Chapter of Trout Unlimited was at it again this fall. Twice a year they visit the cold-water fisheries of Northeast Michigan to fish and celebrate commradery, but most importantly, to work. They work to restore, protect and enhance the rivers they're here to enjoy.
This fall, 14 volunteers were sure to get covered in pine sap and get their waders wet. Focusing on old-fashioned habitat work, the October work project utilized the tops of red pines left on the ground from a previous harvest on Michigan Department of Natural Resource land. Those tree tops made for perfectly sized material to be used as Large Woody Debris.
After a half-day of work, eight new LWD complexes were created, providing essential habitat on the North Branch of the Au Sable River.
A "Thank You" goes out to the Paul H Young Chapter of Trout Unlimited for once again helping to better the health of the cold-water streams of Northest Michigan, and for adding another 50 hours of volunteer labor to their total. |
